PocketTouch now available in the Apple App store

PocketTouch was originally a very famous app that was available to those that had jailbroken their iPhones or iPod touch but now it is finally out officially in the App store. When PocketTouch originally came out, at the time it was the only available third party music controller, but the only thing that kept people back from using it is the fact that you had to jailbreak your iPhone or iPod touch to use it, no more do you have to do so!

So what does PocketTouch do? Its basically an alternative music controller for your iPhone or iPod touch. It allows you to go through and play your music using an awesome new interface which is controlled by simple gestures. It is excellent for when your working because with a single swipe you can pause music, change the track without having to press a tiny pause or forward button on the screen. The developers even claim that it was them that caused Apple to add additional features to the iPhone/iPod touch, which is true to some extent. For example the “Shake to Shuffle” feature was never in the original firmware but PocketTouch had it.

One thing about PocketTouch which is an annoyance is that the “iPod” feature has to be running for PocketTouch to function at all, if its not on PocketTouch just shows a blank screen, the developers claim this is due to Apple not allowing them to run apps in the background. Tapping the “i” icon at the top right opens the settings menu of PocketTouch, which has descriptions of each of the options clearly written.

PocketTouch alos has a plethora of visual music themes, some of them being: AlbumArt, Bluebird, NightGarden, PTWinterNightSky, and PocketTouch. Each theme displays a different visual animation based on acoustics of the music, which i really enjoy. As a music controller app PocketTouch is way better than any other app i have tried the gestures themselves are the best part of it, you can easily shuffle through songs while your iPhone or iPod Touch is in your pocket, no more do you need to take it out and change track.

Gestures are pretty easy, here they are in a nutshell:

  • Swipe to the right – Next Track
  • Swipe to the left – Start of current track
  • Two swipes to the left – Previous track
  • Double-tap – Pause or resume playback
  • Swipe up – Volume up
  • Swipe down – Volume down

If you don’t like the default gestures you can chage them by going into the “Gestures” option when clicking the “i” icon. You can also enable taps which basically allows you to double tap the screen, which would in effect pause the current track that is playing. A feature which is somewhat hidden is that if you want to scroll through all your songs in the manner of the regular iPod interface you can do so by double tapping the black bar at the top which brings up your entire song list. The developers need to highlight this feature a bit better since at its current stage it almost looks like an easter egg. All in all i would recommend anyone that uses their iPhone/iPod touch for listening to music to get this app.
